Gadget and music are close friends of human beings. In the long list of gadgets from which music can be listened, radio is on the top in terms of price and accessibility. Apart from music, other programs like talk shows, humour programs, reality shows are also broadcasts. Being commercial-free radio broadcasting, the digital radio is the new generation radio which comes with more services, clearer reception and a range of other features. This is including of record and rewind capability, text information regarding programs and songs broadcasted in the air, graphics, pictures, web pages and turning by station name. It is now well established in the various parts of Europe, UK and Asia. It uses Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), which is also known as Eureka 147, for broadcasting. In the year 1999, first commercial receivers began. ‘Spart gap telegraphy’ was the oldest form of digital broadcasting, used by one of the pioneers, Marconi. By 2006, 1000 digital audio broadcasting stations were in operation and 500 million people were in the coverage area.
In this 21st century, most new radio systems are digital. It has some fabulous features like easier tuning and more choice of stations. It also has a small screen for text information about the programs on air. This might includes song and artist details about the music you are hear, business news and sports results, the latest news and weather. DAB radio technology can double the number of radio stations you can get on FM, because of the way it transmits a signal and for this technology sound is not interrupted. There is no hiss, crackle, overlap, or fading, just great radio all the time.
Apart form normal FM radio, it can be of two types - Satellite radio and Internet radio. A satellite radio which is also called subscription radio, broadcasts by a communication satellite, covers a much wider geographical range than territorial radio signals. These type of radio services are usually provided by commercial ventures and are subscription-based.

The world of digital radio broadcasting is not static - it demands adaptability and flexibility to meet the ever more rapid digital development, new applications, spectrum efficiency and device features.

When it comes to radio it seems that these days everybody is talking about digital. They do so with reason; here in the UK there is talk of a deadline for analogue switch off. The deadline of 2012 has already been set for analogue television and radio is expected to follow suit. When the deadline arrives, people will either be polishing their shiny new DAB digital radios or using their old analogue system as doorstops or paperweights. With this article I aim to explore the various benefits that come from using a digital radio and shine light on the myths that shroud it.

The most annoying aspect of analogue radio is poor reception and hissing. There’s nothing worse than having to continually adjust the tuning knob to get the reception just right. So does digital really solve this problem? Well, in a word, yes, digital sound quality is generally much better than analogue, but just how good is it. A lot has been made of DAB digital radio having CD quality sound, but is this really true. Potentially yes, but this is a choice of the broadcasting station. The station can choose the quality at which it wishes to broadcast its signal. Talk shows for example are generally broadcast at a lower bandwidth than music stations.

With digital radio, there is no need to remember awkward frequencies of your favourite station. DAB radios search for and make a list of all available stations and almost all systems will store this list to memory. Station selection then becomes nothing more than a simple flick of a switch. The old hassle of searching for a station and finding nothing more than an annoying hissing sound is truly a thing of the past. A good radio will organize your stations by category making them easy to find and access.

Since their introduction some years ago, DAB digital radios have matured a great deal and competition between manufacturers has led to more feature rich systems. New models come with programme guides that allow you to record your favourite programmes and listen when it suites you. Digital displays even display live programme information such as current track, station name, programme host etc. The possibilities really are endless.

A feature you could only dream off with analogue radio; some DAB devices even allow you to pause and rewind live radio so you won’t miss a thing. Yet all this is just the beginning, DAB digital radio is the future and it will be with us for a very long time to come. We can only imagine what the future holds for DAB digital radio but there is one thing for sure, its future is bright and exciting.
